A week reading the Leewards from end to end, where the language, currency and cooking change every few hours of sailing. Day 1

St Martin

Two countries on thirty-seven square miles and a border nobody polices. The Dutch side keeps the marinas, the French side the bakeries and Orient Bay. Settle aboard for the first island night.

Day 2

St Barths

A short reach to St Barths, French, polished and entirely unapologetic. Anchor off Gustavia, walk over the hill to Shell Beach in the afternoon, and dine with a view of the boats.

Day 3

Anguilla

Flat, dry and ringed with the finest beaches in the eastern Caribbean, Shoal Bay, Rendezvous and Meads. Snorkel the reefs, lunch at a beach bar, and anchor where no lights show ashore.

Day 4

St Kitts & Nevis

Brimstone Hill on St Kitts commands a view across four islands, while quieter Nevis wears its own permanent cap of cloud. Anchor off Pinney Beach and take the afternoon slowly.

Day 5

Barbuda

One village, a frigatebird colony thousands strong, and seventeen miles of faintly pink sand. Anchor off the beach, take the tender into the lagoon, and understand what the Caribbean once was.

Day 6

Antigua - Falmouth

Antigua claims a beach for every day of the year and barely exaggerates. Anchor in Falmouth, walk up to Shirley Heights for the view over both harbours, and swim a quiet cove.

Day 7

Antigua - English Harbour

End at English Harbour and Nelson Dockyard, a working Georgian yard still repairing yachts after two hundred and fifty years. A last swim, then a toast to a week in the Leewards.
