Yacht Charter Itinerary

A week across the Turks and Caicos, low, dry and mostly empty islands set on two shallow banks split by a trench two thousand metres deep, which explains both the colour of the water and the quality of the diving. Between the salt cays lie islands with nobody on them at all.

Day 1

Providenciales

Board at Provo and cruise past Grace Bay, twelve miles of sand that tops the lists and deserves to. Snorkel the reef inside the barrier and dine on deck as the bank shifts through every shade of green.

Day 2

South Caicos

Once the salt and fishing capital, South Caicos is now the emptiest of the inhabited islands, bonefish flats on one side and a wall on the other. Anchor at the southern end and watch the frigatebirds work.

Day 3

Grand Turk

Grand Turk holds the tiny capital, some Bermudian colonial houses and a very good little national museum. The wall lies a few hundred metres off the beach; end the day with a sunset cocktail at anchor.

Day 4

Salt Cay

Salt Cay has a few dozen residents, donkeys in the road and salinas evaporating seawater since the seventeenth century, a preserved industrial landscape that simply stopped. Snorkel the reef and walk the salt pans.

Day 5

Big Sand Cay

Uninhabited and a designated bird sanctuary, seven miles south. Turtles nest on the beach and humpbacks pass offshore from January to April. Swim, lie on untouched sand, and take the tender around the cay.

Day 6

French Cay

A former pirate anchorage now a marine sanctuary, low scrub on the edge of the bank with reef sharks patrolling the drop-off. The diving is among the best in the country; picnic on the beach, then move on before dark.

Day 7

West Caicos

Finish at uninhabited West Caicos and dive the wall along its western shore, a vertical drop from fifteen metres into blue hung with sponges and gorgonians, eagle rays passing along it. Then the run back to Provo.
